School in Stalinabad [Dushanbe, Tajikistan], Woman Working with Children, November 27-December 25, 1932
Text
At a school in Stalinabad, a female teacher works with young girls in a classroom that contains various musical instruments. Education reform was a main priority in the early years of the Soviet Union, with emphasis on educating women. Jacobi documented this in her photos of female teachers instructing girls. After the Soviet Union established the Unified Labor School, the ratio of female to male students increased drastically, as did the female literacy rate. As a direct result of the politically-driven education reforms, the Soviet Union saw a female literacy rates increase from 42.7% in 1926 to 81.6% in 1939.
